Unattended Upgrades in Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid Lynx LTS

Posted by admin on May 30th, 2010 filed in Garden Bird Control

Today, I noticed that the recommended upgrade for my LTS Ubuntu 10.04 system was for the unattended-upgrade package. If I were to install this, my system would automatically install upgrades to my system. Read: unattended=without my permission, approval, knowledge, consent, agreement, agreement, assent, or allowance. The main reason I switch to Linux (first Simply Mepis, then Ubuntu 5.04) was that Windows XP would hog my dial-up modem bandwith with constant updates with or without my permission. Often, I couldn’t access the web while Windows was at work. I only knew what changes were to my made AFTER the fact. I felt I had lost control of my own computer. Linux brought the control back. If I wanted no upgrades ( I did not want to upset a stable, working system) I didn’t have to upgrade. I hope to stay with Lucid on my work machine for 1 year, or perhaps until the next stable debian comes out –which ever comes first :). ** Correction unattended upgrade package is already installed. Configure using Software Sources. ** 10.04 is working surprisingly well for me now (as did Dapper, and Heron). Let’s now spoil it with unattended upgrades. I still wince when I think about the very first upgrade I made after I installed Dapper Drake (6.06). I lost X for a couple of days till the Ubuntu devs fixed things.

    Hey there - I may be wrong but I think the “unattended-upgrade” package is already part of your system and this is just an update to it.

    If you go to System > Administration > Software Sources.
    Click on the “Updates” tab.

    You will see there are 3 options for what to do with available updates. The option to “only notify about available updates” should be selected.

    The only way the “unattended-upgrade” package becomes active is if you select “install security updates without confirmation”

    You are right. Synaptic says it is already installed. Before I did the video, I googled and saw that it was not installed by default in Dapper or Hardy.

    Installed or not, my concern was over unapproved updates/upgrades. I rarely use windows at all (VM only) but when I did use XP, I also selected :
    “Notify me before downloading any updates and notify me again before installing them on my computer”
    Windows did what it wanted to do with my system. Will Ubuntu ever override my preferences?

    @allenbeme
    No Ubuntu will never override your preferences This is an open source operating system. According to Ubuntu - “people should have the freedom to customise and alter their software in whatever way they see fit”.

    This package is just another option for the user.
