Problem with a woodpecker?
Posted by admin on July 1st, 2010 filed in Garden Bird ControlWe have a woodpecker that comes and pecks on our house almost non-stop. He does it in the morning and wakes us up, does it during the day and drives us all crazy! We don’t want to hurt him, we just want him to finally stop and give us some peace and quiet. We’ve tried pounding on the walls where he’s pecking, which only makes him stop until he moves on to a different spot. We also tried hanging silver balloons off the house, which are supposed to scare woodpeckers off, but they did no good. Does anyone else have a solution which might work?

More than likely there are insects such as carpenter bees inside the wood on your house. To get rid of the woodpecker, you have to get rid of the insects.

Try spraying the area with ammonia as they don’t like the smell. As an alternative a professional can use tape which they stick to and die. I know you don’t want to hurt them but in another month you may change your mind.

Apparently they do this to call for a mate. Hopefully it will find one soon and give you some peace. Try some ear plugs for a few more weeks, then it may be necessary to buy a shotgun;))

The woodpecker is pecking on the house to stir up bugs to eat. That is the reason woodpeckers peck. Spraying some bug spray where it is pecking will kill the bugs. Then if there are holes, some caulking will fill up the holes.

your bird is not getting bugs out of your house… he’s ‘drumming’ on it…. he’s found that your house has a good sound that will tell all the other woodies around the area that his area is RIGHT HERE and to stay out!…. once his chicks have left the nest, he’ll quit…. but meantime…..
