prelude by Bach on violin…allegro jazzisimo

Here’s some unaccompanied violin recorded with an up-close microphone. It may not be everyone’s cup of tea. But considering the extent to which many people find the modern, conventional violin shoulder stance to be inherently uncomfortable (and sometimes leading to actual health problems), it shouldn’t be surprising that some musicians would explore alternatives. I began by being completely enthralled by the sound of the violin…the nuance…the agility. In my opinion, there are no other musical instruments (besides, perhaps, other violin-family instruments) that offer such potentially satisfying results. But I didn’t want to force my hand into potentially non-ergonomic positions. I used my “standing-up viol” approach from the start, when I began teaching myself violin back in 2003. This video was recorded in 2007. I had already taught myself blockflute and cello, though I would have played the violin in a viol-esque manner whether or not I had played cello. This is because I had always enjoyed early music. When I see violin-family instruments, I see evolved, suped-up viols. No offense is intended to any fine “shoulder” players out there, but “viol style” is one healthy way to play the violin…very old-fashioned (medieval and pre-medieval.) Though, musically, it makes little difference, as all of the operative points of contact of flesh and bone and bowing angles remain the same. No matter how one holds it…there is no “free ride” on a violin. Apparently, it’s even

Extremely lively and playful interpretation. I was trying to your strap, and not til the end did I see the special pocket. Very clever! Thank you for sharing this.

Brilliant! My friends and I would play it like this sometimes but in a playful manner with no real intention. We called it “cello style” xD But I did not actually know this was an actual style. Thank you so much~! I learned something new and you are a very wonderul player. ^w^ This makes me want to experiment other ways of holding a violin.

Thank you. You are very kind.

It’s certainly an “actual” style as far as I’m concerned. For more details, check out the video info.

Yes, one should feel free to experiment. I just posted another video regarding playing the violin with a kaypo. That’s right…a kaypo. Isn’t that a hoot?

    Anti-establishmentarianism rocks!

A very courageous and free interpretation, so much more interesting than the many ‘historical’ literal ones.

Wow that was a very wonderful interpretation, after only three years? I could have never done that! This reminds me of the Viol da brocha, when the string family was played in the elbow and on the lab for the bigger ones!

I must admit, it looked a little disturbing when you shoved that nice violin down your pants, but I’m sure it’s much easier on the neck to play it like that. :) Once you started playing, it sounded pretty amazing! I liked your little cadenza.

    Excellent!

  14. Dagrehn Says:

that was wildly interesting. :D and i am more of a traditional person…

  15. NotronSkillz Says:

    that..was…AWESOME!

  16. unusualmusician Says:

    @Dagrehn

The positive input is much appreciated.

Funny thing is that I’m a more traditional person, too. I often play conservatively and minimally for (hopefully) an “elegant simplicity” result. I also like to avoid hiding behind FX and excessive, muddying reverb. My Spanish vids may reflect that. But regarding THIS one, famous prelude…it (like all Bach) has so much potential that it almost behooves any improvisational musician (worth his salt) to have some fun jazzing it up.

    Play on!

  17. nameofthepen Says:

    Bravo! That was wonderful!
    .
Ha ha…do you ever get flak from offended traditionalists about this playing stance? If so, I’d love to hear/read some of the “reasons” from them as to why this apostasy shouldn’t be encouraged. :D

  18. scotchya Says:

    haha i love your finish!!

  19. unusualmusician Says:

@nameofthepen Thanks! Historically, my stance is more “traditional” than the relatively recent shoulder method. (The info accompanying the video may clarify this.) I’ve not encountered much overt negativity, as it seems fairly self-evident that my approach works well. It’s just tough luck for me that I don’t possess the necessary CASH and CONNECTIONS to afford the requisite MASS-MARKETING and BRIBES that would allow me to pretend to be talented…like a proper modern music “professional.” lol

@luckynbloody Thank you very much, fellow music enthusiast. Please feel free to inspect my other videos ;-) Take care, and may you be more lucky than bloody.
