Fire! In fact, they need fire to burn down the midstory vegetation and keep it from getting thick or high (so the first answer - thick veg - is completely wrong). Also, the fire helps in germinating more young long-leaf pine, the RCW’s favorite pine tree for nesting and foraging here in Florida.

Fire.
It lives in live pine trees. It needs regular fire to clear out all the brush under the trees in order for it to get its food.
