Is it a Wood Pecker or weevils?
Posted by admin on August 1st, 2010 filed in Garden Bird ControlI have a 15 foot Weeping Willow Tree that I planted last year. I recently notice a series of holes around the trunk about 5 feet from the ground and just below where the branches start to sprout. The trunk is about 3 inches wide. I live in Houston Texas. Here are some pictures of the problem

Does anyone know if this a parasite or weevil? or just a woodpecker having fun with my tree?
Thanks

looks like their are bugs under the bark and the wood peckers are going after them

I don’t know where you live but it looks like carpenter bees are in your tree—do you see bark dust at the base of the tree? A systemic killer such as Cygon will kill the critters. Just get some of it and wear gloves, do not breath the fumes, pour the bottle straight all the way around the tree and put a dripping hose there to water the killer into the roots. If the tree is bleeding sap you may need to dig and start over—willows grow like a bad weed.
also give it plenty of water all growing season to ward off borers.

I agree with elmobeta12 on this one

it’s not weevils or bore’s.holes are way to big for that.hang a cut out of a cat in the tree, and your problem will go away.
