I have a costumer that has a cedar sided house and the wood peckers would bore holes in it so I got her to buy a hollow plastic owl and put it on that side of the house no more problem
they are probably finding bugs in gutter. they won’t hurt nothing unless they start pecking your house. if they do that you better find bug problem. they go in our gutters and make a racket every morning this time of year.
They are most likely having lunch - there are probably insects of some sort that they’re going after.
I used to have woodpeckers pecking at the wooden shake roof of my house. When I re-roofed the house, there were thousands of silverfish living under the shakes - the woodpeckers didn’t drill holes into the shakes though, so I assumed they must’ve been knocking on them to scare the silverfish out into the open so they could pick them off directly.
