this bird is after bugs that are either in the siding or below the siding. He will continue to peck and make holes in the house until you have it sprayed and the bugs eliminated. The treatment is expensive but the damage a woodpecker can do will cost a lot more to repair once he gets his fill and leaves. By the way, he may continue pecking for months.

Take all of the wood off your house. Change to aluminum or vinyl siding, or to do something really bold, try making the outside of your house steel. The bird would break his bead an never come back. Hope this helps

coming from an area rife with woodpeckers, I have yet to hear of anybody having luck getting the birds to leave the house alone. Our backyard neighbors have an attractive soffit area that brings one about 6 every morning, sounding like a dang jackhammer.

he’s not after bugs… he’s ‘drumming’ his territory… he found that your house has a really good sound to it and it will tell all the other birds around that THIS is his spot….. when nesting season is over he’ll probably stop…. unless your yard is full of his favorite foods…… so don’t hang suet goodies out there ……

All crevices in the siding small enough to allow crawling/flying critters to enter and raise there families must be caulked shut. the wood pecker will find these critters with there keen sense of hearing and go after them, making a hole large enough to send there long tongue in after them.

Here are Integrated Pest Management Notes on Woodpeckers from the University of CA-Davis: http://www.ipm.ucdavis.edu/PMG/PESTNOTES/pn74124.html Woodpeckers can certainly be pesky. We have one yellow-bellied sapsucker that pecks at the metal box on the PG&E pole. I’ve wished he’d get a 220 v jolt-but not so far! LOL

Wood peckers have very good hearing. It hears bugs in your house and it is eating them. Getting rid of the bugs and sealing up the holes will get rid of the woodpecker. You can buy spray that has a wand that looks like a plastic straw that will spray in the holes.
