How to solve woodpecker problem?

Posted by admin on June 20th, 2010 filed in Garden Bird Control

The past couple of weeks we have had a woodpecker attacking the house every morning. We can’t tell exactly what he is pecking at because every time we open the door to check he flies away. It is definitely on the roof, but we can’t tell if it is hitting the gutters or the siding or something else.

We have had pest control come over and spray for bugs, hoping that would take care of the woodpecker subsequently. No such luck.

We can’t kill it because they are protected, or so the pest control guy said. Either way, neither my husband nor I own a gun or know how to fire one.

Any advice?
Once again, a gun is not an option.

    Here’s what eHow says:

If the woodpecker is drumming to attract a mate or make a nest inside of your siding the solution can be a bit more complicated. You can try to deter the bird by hanging reflective aluminum strips or tin pie pans from the eaves of your house. If you’d rather not have tin pie pans as a home decoration you can also hang a windsock, wind chime or other object in hopes of scaring the woodpecker away.

If you still haven’t solved your woodpecker problems you need to invest in a more sophisticated system. Movement and sound are the best ways to deter a woodpecker. You can buy motion sensor devises that attach to your house then emit a sound anytime a woodpecker or other birds lands. You could also purchase an audio CD with bird distress calls in hopes of scaring off the woodpecker. Attaching a small windmill that has turning arms can also deter a woodpecker.

You can go to most sports stores and buy a really cheap shotgun. It won’t be great but it’ll get the job done.
