How do I keep woodpeckers from damaging my house?
Posted by admin on July 16th, 2010 filed in Garden Bird ControlI have two little black and white woodpeckers (I think they are Hairy Woodpeckers) that are trashing the wood corners around my house by putting walnut-sized holes in them. They were here in the fall, and they are back in the spring. I keep patching, but I don’t see this problem going away. I’m in a neighborhood with close neighbors (for those who would suggest a bee-bee gun). What can I do about them?

Had the same problem on my home with 4 by 8 cedar siding. Little critters were crawling into the vent holes on each side of the siding sheets. Took a caulking gun and filled all the holes, hundreds of them as my house is huge. This took care of the problem for quite a while. Last summer I heard a woodpecker pounding on the house, sure enough, I found a hole that I had missed. I paint over the caulking as soon as I apply it. The woodpeckers must have incredible hearing to be able to detect a miniature critter moving around inside the siding, as they fly by.

Hire an exterminator. They’re after the bugs in the siding. Eliminate the food, eliminate the bird.

They are after the bugs. That is the reason woodpeckers peck on wood. You could scare them away for awhile and they should leave and find some where else to peck.
