How can I deter pigeons?

Please don’t suggest spikes, since the b*stards enjoy sitting in the flower beds - thereby flattening/killing my flowers. They’ve also taken to wandering on the lawns. If they’d do it quietly, I wouldn’t mind so much, but their awful cooing (which it isn’t really, more of a grating sound!) is really getting on my nerves.

Ultra sonic is deemed to be unsuccessful and any sort of alarm with the call of birds of prey would be an annoyance to myself, as well as my neighbours.

These vermin carry disease and fleas - why, oh why, do people see fit to keep them?
@Kryssy: I’m cautious not to harm the wild birds that are around - in abundance. We’re not allowed pets, but I’ve seriously thought about a cat or even a peregrine!

Sadly, thisbrit, a snake isn’t going to get those on neighbours’ roofs - and it might just get me! As our contract clearly states "no pets", I’m seeking another option.
@thisbrit Most pigeons are kept by hobbists: ie for racing/homing. This is why so many are annoyed when they eat food left out for the wild birds, given that they were fed that morning and likely again in the evening in the owner’s coop.
@HillClimber This means climbing up on my roof - something I’m not sure I’m safe to do, let alone within the limits of my tenancy. However, even with this done, doesn’t it mean putting more on neighbours’ roofs and in their gardens?

First of all we need to determine what sort of pigeons they are. Are they ring-necked or collared doves? (a sort of slate grey bird, on the elegant side with a longish tail and pale plumage - best recognised by a narrow white edged black bar across the side of its neck). Are they wood pigeons? (large in size and full-breasted with a large white patch on the neck and a purplish hue on the breast). Or are they, in fact, the feral pigeon - tree rat - such as used to be fed in Trafalgar Square? Are they ringed? This, of course, means they are from a pigeon-fancier’s loft. I’m afraid poison is not really the solution in a suburban environment. Mesh or netting is about the only thing with which you can protect your plants from them. Stopping putting food out for the other birds will encourage them to search for easier pickings elsewhere. Provided you are not aiming towards a public thoroughfare or a neighbouring plot the use of an airgun could be appropriate to deter the more persistent hangers-on, but then you have to be sufficiently unsqueamish to finish the job humanely if you do not cleanly kill at first. Good luck!

    Put out some rat poison.

I’m very curious about this, too. The dude that lived in the apartment next to mine tried everything…a fake owl, orange ropes, that dust stuff that’s supposed to deter them… My old building had those spikes and the buggers just nested in it….

I really hope you get a good answer, cause they’re drivng me crazy, too. Not to mention my kitten.

Poison is a good choice if you have no other pets around.

But who are the people keeping the pigeons? I thought they were wildlife?

    Buy/get a cat or two?

Or a snake that is tied to the ground. . . well, dunno how you would do that.

They make good eating if you can catch/shoot one.
