Bird Spikes For Roofs

Whether your looking to put your bird spikes on your home roof or on your business property roof, you have to know what you are doing and be safe when your on the roof. There has been so many stories of folks that have fallen off roofs because the ladder was not secure or they have slipped and fallen off. I could go on and on, so that would be your first precausion.

First you need to find out how many feet of bird spikes you need to buy. This will be your first visit to the roof to measure. One word of advice would be that if your ledge is wide, then the best thing is to put two rows of bird spikes that are not too close together. If you are going down this route then double your measurements.

Next thing to remember is when your down at the shops, you need to buy screws and the correct glue for the bird spikes, depending on what surface your attaching the spikes to. The wright glue to get is a non silicone construction grade glue that usually comes in a caulking tube.

If your working on a wooden surface then use the glue and the screws for extra strength but if it’s metal, brick or concrete then you have to only use the glue that was mentioned earlier. Now that your at this point, you would be advised to have your spikes overhanging your ledge by about an inch so that there is no way of nesting for the birds, also if you are doubling your spikes then make sure that they overlap so there is not gap in between for the birds to land.

Remember that you should disinfect the problem areas before you attach your bird spikes so that you can keep bird disease down to a minimum. Do the job wright and you do it only once.

Every morning at 5am a loud woodpecker sound comes from next door, is there a woodpecker calling device?

This sound only happens at 5am, sounds just like a woodpecker and is very loud. Is there a electronic woodpecker calling/ drumming device? I have had problems with woodpeckers for the last couple of summers. What could sound like this? What kind of alarm are these people using to wake themselves up that would sound outside and make this kind of noise?

Why is a Red-bellied Woodpecker tapping my window?

I have a real issue with this red-bellied woodpecker. Everday, since last week, this woodpecker has been going to the same windows and tapping them over and over from around 8ish in the morning to the early evening.

Now I’ve read that this tapping has to do with mating or territory, but during the fall? This woodpecker taps constantly at the windows; if we scare it from one, it will fly and wait till we leave and then return and tap the window, or move to a different one and tap. It has even flown into the window a few times, on purpose.

I don’t know why it’s doing this, or if it’s normal. I wonder if it’s mentally ill or something? How can we stop this from continuing without harming it?

One last thing. Do they migrate? We live in MN, in the Twin Cities suburbs. We have never had this problem before, and now it just showed up last week and hasn’t left since.

Any advice would be helpful.

how can you get rid of woodpeckers?

its eating holes in my house. there are no insects in the wood siding so thats not the problem. It targets under a bay window where the wall is hollowed out perhaps to find a mate with the drumming noise. i tried the plastic owl only to find out after some research that they don’t ward off the stupid pecker. please help.
I’ve heard calling the DNR may be one option, the mirrors, metal sheeting, fake spiders that swoop down activated by noise, the hawk silhouette, balloons, tin foil, the tacky goopy stuff that tastes bad, im just not sure what works. please help my last resort is the bb gun and i would like to not have to resort to that.

Elk overrun Rocky Mountain National Park(Park service weighs options, including a controversial hunt)?

ROCKY MOUNTAIN NATIONAL PARK, Colo. - In Rocky Mountain National Park, the only thing more popular than the breathtaking scenery is the elk.
There are traffic jams and lawn chair gatherings just to watch — and listen — to the elk’s bugle.
But these majestic beasts have become just a little too comfortable here. According to park officials there are about 1,000 too many.

Some 3,000 of them now hang around in places they shouldn’t be. Grass that’s usually knee-high has been nibbled down. White-barked aspen trees are now scarred black by voracious elk appetites.

“You have a lot of dead trees in this area,” says the park service’s Kyle Patterson. “So you have no regeneration. No new growth.”

And the elk are pushing other wildlife out, says park service biologist Therese Johnson — songbirds, woodpeckers, various sorts of butterflies and other insects, and beaver.

Roving bands of elk wander into the nearby town of Estes Park, munching on lawns and gardens. And on the golf course, there’s new meaning to the phrase “play through.”

Police Chief Lowell Richardson now battles his own unique gang problem.

“We’ve actually had pedestrians or residents attacked by an elk during calving season,” Richardson says.

Possible solutions are in a 500-page proposal from the National Park Service, including:

Inject the females with birth control.
Bring a few wolves down from Yellowstone and let the laws of nature take over.
Do nothing … and watch the elk multiply.
The most controversial option is to kill 1,000 elk, using wildlife agents with silencers on their rifles. The park service maintains any killing would be done in the dead of night.

“Having that done in front of park visitors,” says Vaughn Baker, the superintendent of Rocky Mountain National Park, “that’s probably not part of the part experience we want to have out there.”

But down on the banks of the Big Thompson, the idea of shooting elk doesn’t sit well with tourists like Mitchell Dugger.

“I think there’s some better ways to do it,” he says, “than taking them out with guns.”
For the next two months the park service will chew over the public’s response to how it plans to control what’s become too much of a good thing.

Darn Pests. Eating my strawberries and cherries. Any gardeners that can help?

I have a fairly large yard, and it is the norm in my neighbourhood to have gardens, trees, and the like. The problem is, this has attracted different species of wildlife. Now there are rabbits, squirrels, occasional raccoons, in the winter, foxes, many birds, crows, woodpeckers.. The list goes on. All these mammals and birds are usually a joy to behold, but they seem to be eating my strawberries.. I have not yet caught the culprit, but they are getting off easy anyhow as I like to use non-lethal ways to deal with pesky critters.

Leaf-sapping, cherry-destroying, shirt-staining, sticky, tiny, little insects, however, I cannot give as much slack. I describe them as small, round beetle-like bugs. They cannot fly and are very, very, tiny. Maybe 1millimetre in length and width. They don’t eat the leaves, but it seems like they are more parasitic; they latch on and sap the life out of the leaves. The leaves remain green, but they shrivel and slowly turn rotten. Oh, and they reproduce at the speed of light. I am still against chemical warfare, though, but other than that, I’ll do anything. I value my cherries above all other fruits in my yard. The old tree is 50 years old, and undoubtedly it’ll survive these pests, but I don’t know if I can. Help?
