bird problem,I need advice about a wild bird?
Posted by admin on September 28th, 2010 filed in Garden Bird Controlthis is what happened. I saw a hurt bird in the road & brought it home to nurse back to health. then when it is all better I will let it go outside.
this is the problem. all night long this bird kept pecking at the branch I put in the cadge for it to sit on. this morning I found it all pecked up and parts of it on the floor of the cage. the banging kept me up all night. so I decided to look this bird up on the internet. I found out it is a female adult WOODPECKER!!!! AHHHHHH!
how do I sleep through this while she heals? other then the pecking she makes no sound
thank you everyone. I tried to call but since its a holiday weekend noone is in. so I will suffer it out until I can give her to a vet or wildlife refuge people.

You should not be caring for this bird..it is actually illegal for you to have it in your possession. You need to get it to an expert at a local wildlife rehab so that they can get it the proper medical care and diet it needs before releasing it back into the wild. Look here for a rehab near you:

a wildlife rescue is your best bet, woodpeckers eat insects that they find in wood and under the bark of trees, she was looking for something to eat

it is better that you hand this bird over to the vets so they can take care of this properly. they can then hand it over to a wildlife group who specialises in wild birds and will nurse it back together.
its funny actually, i found an injured pigeon last night and rang the RSPCA who told me to keep it over night in a dark quiet space and then to hand it over to the vets in the morning. which i did do and now i know she is in the correct hands and will get the most effective treatment.
its better than trying to take care of it yourself because unless your an expert in the field you dont know for sure that you are doing the right thing.
