Are woodpeckers bad?

Posted by admin on August 21st, 2010 filed in Garden Bird Control

We have a deck and have been putting out seeds just around the rails. We have an incredible amount of birds all over our backyard now - it is so beautiful to see - probably 20 different kinds!

Our problem started when a woodpecker showed up. I didnt really think anything of it, but then I looked out one day and it was not eating - it was PECKING! What do we do?????????

I have noticed that in places our deck looks a little rough (jagged) but it might have been that way before. I am just FREAKING out - can this bird destroy our deck??!!

Can anyone Help?

yes it’s a wood pecker!!! what u should do is stop giving food for like 2 or1 months so all the birds go away even the pecker than start giving it backout. or surf on wiki how how to get rid of a wood pecker

well i am not completely sure we have a tree in our front yard it honestly looks like someone took a machine gun and went all the way around from top to bottom there are holes less than an inch apart up and down i dont think there is an inch on the tree without a hole woodpeckers can kill trees and cause them to rot but they can make ur deck look really bad and the wood can split and it could fall apart

Wood peckers eat insects in rotten wood. If your deck is not rotten, then don’t worry, he’ll find a tree somewhere to nibble. If your deck is rotten, then that is why he is checking it for bugs. They typically peck in a horizontal pattern around a tree trunk. It looks like a line of small, neat holes. They make a very loud, distinctive pecking sound and they do not eat bird seed.

We have woodpeckers also and they went from the feeders to pecking holes in our wood siding , which by the way is not rotten. I read from Feb to June this is part of the mating ritual and the worst one is the Pilated one. He can rip large holes in wood.We try to put out suet cakes that keep them busy and we try to chase the Pilated one away . He usually stays in the near by woods. He is the worse for distruction. Taking away the feeders will not discourage them. They are looking for bugs. Wood to them is wood. They say to put up things that make noise. whirlygigs and fake owls and fake snakes.Hope this helps.

Woodpeckers are not good or bad, they are just birds. They peck at things for three reasons - to eat (they eat insects they find in the wood, so your deck may have an insect infestation you need to deal with…the insects will destroy your deck long before the woodpecker will); to nest (they hollow out a cavity in a dead tree, so don’t worry, they won’t be setting up housekeeping in your deck); and to communicate with other woodpeckers (territorial warnings and mating calls).

If you want to get rid of the woodpecker before he makes lacework out of your deck, remember - in the US, all native migratory birds are protected by federal law (Migratory Bird Treaty Act) and it is illegal to harm any protected bird. Violators of the Act are subject to a fine of up to $500, jail up to six months, or both. http://ipl.unm.edu/cwl/fedbook/mbta.html

Here is what the US Fish and Wildlife Service advises when confronted with a woodpecker problem: http://www.fws.gov/nevada/nv_species/urban_wildlife/woodpecker.htm

They can really put a hurting on porch pillars (even the big, round smooth ones) , telephone poles and all kinds of things. You have to keep chasing them off when you see them. I’ve never seen anything that really deters them. And they will eat a lot of the seed you put out, no matter what it is. I have seen them do it when there was no feeders or seed around. I guess you will just have to keep an eye out and chase them off
